Echols and Husted are Golden at World Masters Championships in Poland

IN THEIR WORDS

MARK HUSTED

This trip to Poland was the focus of my training all winter. Upon arriving in Torun, I was able to check out the amazing indoor facility with a banked track and explore the city where Nicolaus Copernicus once called home. The city of Torun has tons of history, beautiful views along the river, and great places to eat.

My first race was the 3000m where the lead pack ran very tactically, closing our last 300m in 39 seconds, as I finished in second place. In the 800m finals, I took the lead half way through the race and got passed on the last curve where I was able to hold onto another silver medal.

The 1500m finals was a very special race for me. My pregnant sister was in labor and was at the hospital when I was warming up for the race. 20 minutes before my race started, my niece Blakely Marie Pascoe was born and the excitement of becoming an Uncle was overflowing. Throughout the race I kept thinking this was for my sister and Blakely. Taking the lead with 200m to go, I was able to open up almost a four second lead to celebrate my first win of the meet. The following day I traveled all the way back to Colorado and was able to visit with my niece Blakely at the hospital that evening.

I want to thank USA Track & Field for the travel grant, the support of my friends and the Colorado School of Mines team, and my family (now a little bigger).
