Echols and Husted are Golden at World Masters Championships in Poland

Results 

On Sunday (2-April) the 2023 World Masters Championships concluded in Torun, Poland. USATF Colorado was represented by ten athletes who competed in 22 events.  

4,168 athletes from 89 countries competed during the seven days of competition held at Torun Arena Sports Hall.
 
The highlights for the Colorado members were the gold medal winning performances turned in by Antonio Echols of Huntsville, AL and Mark Husted of Golden, CO.  

Antonio Echols

Echols, 40, ran to victory in M40-44 60m and 200m events. In the 60m he stopped the clock at 6.93 to defeat Johan O'Gilvie of Jamacia by .11 seconds. His time was just .03 seconds off the U.S. record. In the 200m, an event he set the U.S. record in just two week earlier at the USATF championship, he ran 22.33; .37 seconds off his U.S. record.

Husted, 35, the 2022 USATF Colorado Masters Track & Field Athlete of the Year, won the 1500m running 4:02.00. It was his second world title following the 5000m title he won outdoors last year in Finland. He also won a silver medals in the 800m (1:55.90) and 3000m (8:49.63).

MARK HUSTED - The 1500m finals was a very special race for me. My pregnant sister was in labor and was at the hospital when I was warming up for the race. 20 minutes before my race started, my niece Blakely Marie Pascoe was born and the excitement of becoming an Uncle was overflowing.

Joining Husted as a silver medalist was Tracey Bernett, 67, of Niwot. Bernett finished second in the W65 1500m. She also finished 10th in the 400m running 1:22.10.

In the Race Walking events Marianne Martino of Littleton finished fourth in the W70-74 10 km (1:06:20) and seventh in the 3000m (19:09.91). Carol Wilkinson of Longmont, also competing in the W70-74 division, finished ninth in the 10 km (1:13:39) and 10th in the 3000m (21:14.09). Erycka Fisher of Broomfield finished fifth in the W35-39 javelin throw with a mark of 31.06m. She also finished sixth in the shot put and 12th in the long jump.

Roman Marenin of Highlands Ranch finished sixth in the M35-39 400m (50.49).

Todd Straka of Boulder finished 14th in the M55-59 800m (2:18.42) and 18th in the 1500m (4:47.67).

John Perez of Centennial finished 15h in the M70-74 Half Marathon (2:00:43) and 31st in the 6 km cross country event.

Roland Kafuuma of Erie finished 22nd in the M45-49 400m    (1:00.77) and 36th in the 200m (26.98).
