Andy Wacker and Mackenzie Caldwell raced to open division victories at the USATF Colorado 1 Mile Championships, held August 7 as part of the Mountain Avenue Mile in Fort Collins. The championships marked the third race in the year-long USATF Colorado Long Distance Running Grand Prix.
Wacker led the men’s field with a winning time of 4:09, while Caldwell claimed the women’s title in 5:01. In the masters competition, thirteen athletes earned Colorado titles.
In the Open Men’s race, Andy Wacker, 37, captured the Colorado title in 4:09, finishing five seconds ahead of Billy Ulrich, who crossed the line in 4:14. Patrick Hetlage (The Track Club Boulder) rounded out the championship podium in 4:23.
On the women’s side, Mackenzie Caldwell (The Track Club Boulder) earned the state title with her 5:01 performance. Thirteen-year-old Allison Hofstra finished second in 5:15, while Kierann Toth (Fort Collins Running Club) placed third overall in 5:18. Toth's performance also earned her the W40-44 masters title.
The Masters Women’s championships featured winners across six age divisions. In addition to Toth’s W40-44 victory, Kelly Joy (Run Boulder Athletic Club) won the W45-49 division in 5:25.
Tina Gini Larter (Athletics Boulder) captured the W55-59 title in 6:14, while clubmate Lin Lascelles won the W60-64 division in 6:21.
Wendy White earned the W65-69 championship in 7:10, and Jill Walkinshaw claimed the W70-74 title in 7:36.
On the men’s side, Taylor Smith led the masters champions, winning the M40-44 division in 4:41. Kevin Hofstra followed with a 4:55 performance to capture the M45-49 title.
Fort Collins Running Club’s Mark Saunders won the M50-54 division in 5:01, while Flavio De Simone (Boulder Road Runners) claimed the M55-59 championship in 5:16.
Brad Cooper (Fort Collins Running Club) won the M60-64 title in 5:43, and Rick Bruess (Athletics Boulder) captured the M65-69 championship in 6:40.
Rounding out the masters champions was Martin Lascelles (Athletics Boulder), who won the M70-74 division in 6:26.
The USATF Colorado LDR Grand Prix continues on October 4 with the USATF Colorado Half Marathon Championships in Windsor. The race will be the next opportunity for Colorado athletes to compete for association championship honors and earn points toward the year-long LDR Grand Prix standings.
