Sayre leads Boulder M60+ to third place finish at USATF Masters 12 km Championships in New Jersey
This was the first USATF Masters Grand Prix since race since the USA cross country championships in early 2020, and the first road race since the Tulsa 15 km in the fall of 2019. I got injured in that race, and after leading for the first 10 km I had to walk the final 5K to ensure that we earned enough team points to secure a second place spot in the 2019 Grand Prix series. It took five months to heal from that injury, and then the pandemic hit. So it has been a long road back. The race in New Jersey was a great way to return, the course was flat and fast although it was warm, humid, and windy on Sunday. The weather may have been an equalizer but there were some very fast times, with several American age group records on the day. I had to dig deep for a fast sprint to the finish, and I'm certain I found a gear that I haven't seen for years in a race or a workout. It's great to be back! Thanks to USATF for continuing the series and making it better, USATF New Jersey for putting on a great event, and for the Boulder Road Runners club and team for support and encouragement over our long hiatus.
