Getting to Know......AGUR DWOL

How did you get your start in track & field?

I started running track during my freshman year and I initially wanted to be a sprinter. Then my coaches introduced me to the jumps side of track and I immediately fell in love.

You had a very successful high school career, what would you consider the two (or three) most memorable highlights so far?

The most memorable moment of my high school career was definitely my freshman year at state. I somehow won the triple jump and that’s when I knew this is really something I’d love to continue doing and growing with.
Recently I was able to participate in my first track and field indoor nationals competition. I didn’t perform as well as I wanted to and I was extremely upset about it but that meet made me realize that it’s okay to not always be the best. That it’s okay to struggle a little bit. I’ve learned that no matter what the mark is or isn’t, I should remain confident within myself because I know what I’m capable of.

What off-the track memories will you carry forward from your high school career?

Everyday in Sophomore year 4th period Spanish.

Favorite subject in school?

Call me crazy but anything math related. Numbers just make sense to me.

Something unique about you that we might not know about you?

Maybe that I’m double jointed in my toes?

Favorite Food?

Any form of potatoes.

Favorite Restaurant?

Definitely the Nile Ethiopian in Aurora. If you’ve never had Ethiopian food this place is 10/10 the best place to start.

Favorite music?

I listen to almost everything but I would say my favorite genres might be R&B and Rap.

Favorite TV Shows?

I love How to Get Away With Murder. It’s definitely my favorite show of all time and Snowfall is a close second

Instagram, Snapchat, or Twitter?

Definitely Instagram for me. I love seeing everyone’s different aesthetics and just seeing what people are up to. Follow me ;) @agur.dwol

If you could have lunch with one person who would it be?

Definitely Viola Davis. She is not only my favorite actor but she’s so so intelligent and inspiring. I feel like I could learn a lot from her.

How about dinner with one person?

If he were still alive, Chadwick Boseman.

Your Role Model?

Definitely my parents. They’ve gone through so much to get where they are today and while going through so much and endeavoring so much pain they didn’t let that get in the way of being great parents. They’ve taught me so much and their struggle is what has motivated me the most.

Favorite Athlete?

Simone Biles. #GirlBoss

Goals for your college career?

Win a national title.

You recently enrolled at the University of Oklahoma. What factored into your decision to pick Oklahoma?

If I’m being honest I initially didn’t even want to give OU a chance. I’m sorry but the thought of living in Norman just didn’t sound appealing to me but when I actually went out and visited I absolutely loved it. Everyone there was so welcoming and sweet and I realized Norman has so much to offer. OU historically has a great Jumps program and that’s my specialty so that was just the cherry on top. Before I even left back home I knew that this is where I wanted to be for the next four years.

What other schools did you consider?

I initially thought that I was gonna end up going to Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt had so much to offer and it’s a great school but Oklahoma was just the better pick.

Do you know what you want to study in college yet?

I’m thinking about going down the bio pre-nursing track but I’m not 100% sure yet.

What do you want to be doing in 5 years? 10 years?

Making money and doing what I love.

Giavonna Meeks, 17, is a senior at Northfield High School in Denver, who has announced she will matriculate to Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn in the fall.

At Vanderbilt she plans to study Human and Organizational Development/ Health and Human Services.

She won the 2021 Colorado 4A state title in the Discus and recently won the Weight Throw at the Nike Indoor Nationals in New York.  She recently threw 162-11 in the Discus to move up to #4 on the Colorado high school all-time list and her 47-3 mark from last in the Shot Put is the #5 performance in Colorado history.

In our interview below with Meeks we learn more about her college decision, who she would most like to have dinner with, her favorite food, her favorite athlete, her go-to social media platform, her goals for the remainder of her senior year, and much more.

How did you get your start in track & field?

I’ve always played sports and when I was in my basketball phase, my coach kept telling me to try track because I would run too fast for the ball. I was really hesitant to start a new sport so late (summer going into 9th grade) because I didn’t want to suck, but one day I was like why not and went to a Parker Panthers track practice. I’ve been doing it ever since!

You have been very successful high school career, what would you consider the two or three most memorable highlights so far?

Definitely my first would be competing in Florida last summer at the USATF Junior Olympic nationals and earning that All American Status. I would also say becoming long jump state champion last year was one of the most beautiful moments along with competing at Penn Relays this past weekend!

Tell us about your experience competing at the National Junior Olympic championships last year in Florida.

It was one of the best meets I’ve been to in terms of the connections I made and my overall performance. I wasn’t able to have a coach come with me but I relied on my experience with all the events and just remembered to stay competitive! It also was my third time ever competing in the heptathlon so that meet was definitely a turning point in my love and passion for the event itself and made me work even harder for this summer’s Outdoor Nationals!

What off-the track memories will you carry forward from your high school career?

Going on my official collge visits and hanging out with my steadfast family during travel meets!

Favorite subject in school?

It’s a tie between Biology or English.

Something unique about you that we might not know about you?

I grew up speaking french!

Favorite Workout?

Anything with hurdles because it seems to hurt less. I would put a 300 hurdle workout at the top!

Favorite place to train?

I love training at Arapahoe High School, the long jump pit there is top tier.

Favorite Food?

Rice all day.

Favorite music?

Any day of the week, I’m rocking with J. Cole or Summer Walker. But I love R&B in general.

Favorite TV Shows?

Haha anything that’s Top Ten on Netflix, I’m one of those people.

Instagram, Snapchat, or Twitter?

Instagram!

If you could have lunch with one person who would it be?

Sydney McLaughlin!

How about dinner with one person?

Probably, definitely, Michelle Obama.

Your Role Model?

My older sister.

Favorite Athlete?

Anna Hall, I’m kind of obsessed with her. Only a little though.

Goals for the remainder of your high school career?

To soak everything in and perform to my potential! The awards, marks and times will come with consistency and confidence as the season goes.

You recently announced you will attend Harvard University after graduation.  What factored into your decision to pick Harvard?

A super long list of things like location, campus, team vibe, coaches, the academics of the school etc. But what sold me was the feeling of being at home on my official. No matter what the other schools had to offer, that feeling only comes once for one school and it’s important to listen to it!

Do you know what you want to study in college yet?

I want to major in biology with a focus in pre med!

What do you want to be doing in 5 years? 10 years?

I can’t imagine being 23 but hopefully I’ll have survived the MCAT and I’m headed to med school, we’ll see how life goes though.
