On Sunday (2-Aprile) 10 athletes and two teams from Colorado competed in the USATF Masters 10 Mile Championships in Sacramento, Calf. The championship, hosted by the SACTOWN Run, was the fifth race in the 2023 USATF National Masters Grand Prix. A total of 189 athletes competed in the championships.

Fernando Cabada Jr. (Aurora), Roger Sayre (Golden, Boulder Road Runners), Douglas Chesnut (Louisville, Boulder Road Runners), Gary Ostwald (Denver, Boulder Road Runners), and the Boulder Road Runners M70+ team ran to national titles against the top runners in the country.

Cabada, 40, competing in his first masters championship, was the first athlete to cross the line as he won the 40-44 title in a time of 49:03. He defeated Malcom Richards of California by 37 seconds. Finishing third in the division was Benjamin Payne, 41, of Colorado Springs in a time of 51:20. Cabada's performance scored 92.22% on the age-grading tables which was the fourth best score of the 117 men that competed. Those with the top age graded scores are considered the athletes with the best performance across all runners in the competition. Scores of 90% and over are considered world class performances.

IN THEIR WORDS - Fernando Cabada

I am so happy to get my first USASTF masters championship title! My goal is to have fun and to lead by example. To show that being a Masters Runner doesn’t necessarily mean we don’t run fast anymore. I want to prove I can still roll with the best in the country, no matter the age. This was a good prep for the Boston Marathon held April 17th, 2023.

Sayre, 65, averaged 6:07 per mile to win the men's 65-69 division as he stopped the clock at 1:01:13. Finishing second in the division was his Boulder Road Runner teammate Jack Pottle.  Pottle, 68, finished in 1:07:24. Sayre's performance scored 92.24% on the age-grading tables which was the third best score among the men on the day. It just missed his career best score of 92.40% set at the World Masters Championships half marathon in 2019.

In the men's 70-74 division Douglas Chesnut, 70, ran 1:10:40 to win his first USATF masters title. He defeated Gerhard Fischer of California by 3 minutes and 20 seconds. His Boulder Road Runners teammate Doug Bell finished third running 1:16:57.

In the men's 75-79 division Gary Ostwald, 77, won his second national title of the year, as he stopped the clock at 1:17:34. In January he was victorious at the USATF Cross Country Championships in Virginia. His Boulder Road Runners teammate Jan Frisby finished sixth running 1:26:19.

Chesnut, Bell, and Ostwald combined to win the M70+ team title for the Boulder Road Runners. Their combined time of 3:45:09 defeated the Tamalpa Runners by over 24 minutes.

The Boulder Road Runners M60+ team, comprised of Sayre, Pottle, and Adam Feerst, finished second with a total team time of 3:16:01. The Atlanta Track Club won with a team score of 3:10:07.

The lone Colorado woman to compete in the championships was Edie Stevenson, 73, of Boulder. Stevenson, who competes for the Boulder Road Runners, finished second in the women's 70-74 division running 1:25:04. Her age graded score of 89.04% was the seventh best of the 72 women that competed.

The next event on the USATF Masters Grand Prix schedule is the USATF Masters Half Marathon Championships on April 16 in Syracuse, NY.
