Burns, Echols, Marenin, Straka, Yarmul, Woods turn in world-class performances at Masters nationals in New York

Colorado Results Scoreboard

On Sunday (20-Mar) the 2022 USATF Masters Indoor Championships concluded in New York. USATF Colorado was represented by seventeen athletes who competed in 30 events.  948 athletes from 46 states competed during the three days of competition held at The Armory Track & Field complex.

Colorado members won six (6) national titles and a total of 16 championship medals (for finishing in the top three in an event final).

The highlights for the Colorado members were the double gold medals won by Roman Marenin and the 90+ age-graded performances turned in by Marenin, Matt Burns, Antoine Echols, Todd Straka, Christina Yarmul, and Thal Woods.

MARENIN IS GOLDEN X2

Marenin, 36, (Centennial State TC) of Highlands Ranch won two gold and added a silver and bronze medal during a busy weekend in New York.  All four of his performances scored over 90 on the age-graded tables (scores over 90 are considered world class performances).  He won the the M35-39 400m in a time of 49.77 (91.41) and the 60m Hurdles in 8.54 (90.28).  In the 200m he ran 22.59 (90.78) to finish second and was third in the 60m running 7.21 (91.68).

"While as a competitor we're always striving for faster times, longer throws and jumps, and higher marks, I was able to run times consistent with where I've been this season. As a result, I was able to bring back two national titles to Colorado, along with a silver and a bronze. My favorite part of these meets is getting reacquainted with my track family; spending time with friends, making new ones, and sharing a passion we all have for this sport. I've been so lucky to be healthy and relatively successful in this sport during my short masters tenure, and I can't wait for many more years to come where I can represent the amazing state of Colorado!  A big thank you to the local organizing committee in New York, the officials that worked the meet, and all of the volunteers and employees at the Armory for welcoming all of us and putting on an amazing meet!"

GOLD WAS FOUND IN THE CITY

In addition to Marenin's two gold medals Antoine Echols, Matt Burns, Erycka Fisher, and Ian Tullberg each won a gold medal.

Echols, 38, (Centennial State TC) won the men's 35-39 60m and finished third in the 200m.  In the 60m he ran 6.95 which scored 95.85 (the highest age-graded score by a Colorado athlete).  His time in the 200m was 22.71 (91.06).

Burns, 50, of Highlands Ranch, won the men's 50-54 High Jump with a clearance of 1.90m (6-2¾) which scored 95.00 on the age grading tables.  He was just 1.25 inches off of the American record.  Burns was a 2-time Big Ten champion while a student-athlete at the University of Minnesota and won the 2018 USATF masters outdoor title in the 45-49 division.  This was only his second masters national championship.

"I loved being able to compete at such an iconic venue.  I had never been to the Armory before and having the Championships there was a big part of why I decided to compete. I had so much fun though.  I'm definitely going to try to stay in shape and jump at the championships outdoors this year too."

Fisher, 35, of Broomfield scored 1877 pts. to win the women's 35-39 Pentathlon.

Tullberg, 45, (Above The Bar TC) of Castle Rock won the men's 45-49 Pole Vault clearing 4.00m (13-1½)

THEY ARE WORLD CLASS
