Smith sets American record at Masters Championships in Iowa

Donley, Marenin, Marriott, Martino, and Raham all earn multiple titles

On Sunday (25-Jul) the USATF Masters Outdoor Championships concluded in Ames, Iowa. USATF Colorado was represented by 14 athletes who competed in 26 events.  1051 athletes from 49 state  competed during the four days of competition that began on Thursday (23-Jul),

Colorado members won 20 national titles and a total of 48 championship medals (for finishing in the top three in an event final).
 
The highlights of the meet for the Colorado members were the American record by Mary Smith (Colorado Springs; Colorado Masters TFC) and the multiple national titles won by Christel Donley (Colorado Springs; Colorado Masters TFC), Roman Marenin (Highlands Ranch; Centennial State TC), Joanne Marriott (Arvada, CO; Colorado Masters TFC), Marianne Martino (Littleton; High Altitude Racewalk Team, and Sharon Raham (Wellington; Colorado Masters TFC).

Smith ripped a 1:30.84 to set a new American record in the W80-84 400m.  The previous record was 1:33.94 set in 2018 by Rose Green of Maryland.

Raham, 75, won all five throwing events in the W75-79 division.   Her winning marks were: Shot Put (23-4), Discus Throw (53-4), Javelin Throw (64-10), Hammer Throw (81-8), and Weight Throw (32-9).

Winning three gold medals were Roman Marenin and Joanne Marriott.  Marenin, 38, won the men's 35-39 400m (50.31), 110m Hurdles (15.07), and 400m Hurdles (53.83).  He also finished third in the 200m running 22.35. Marriott, 82, won the women's 80-84 Shot Put (20-7), Hammer Throw (63-7), and Weight Throw (26-9). She also was second in the Javelin Throw and third in the Discus Throw.

Being at the National Meet was very much a great experience, from seeing old friends, getting to compete again, and being a part of the whole USATF Masters experience.  I didn’t have really high goals for this meet, since I had been out of competing for a couple of years.  I was pleased just to be there and be throwing again.


Winning two gold medals were Christel Donley and Marianne Martino. Donley, 86 won the 200m (57.95) and High Jump (3-0½) in the W85-89 division and also picked silver medals in the Long Jump, Triple Jump, and Hammer Throw.  Her husband, Jerry Donley, 90,  won the Shot Put in the M90-94 division.  Martino, 70, won the W70-74 5000m and 10,000 Race Walk races.  In the 5000m she walked 32:26.83 and her winning time in the 10,000m was 1:06:28.25.

Others winning national titles were Ian Tullberg (M40-44 Pole Vault) and Alfredo Sanchez (M45-49 400m Hurdles).  Tullberg (Colorado Springs; Above The Bar TC) cleared 13-5¼ to win the pole vault.  Sanchez of Castle Rock ran 1:06.03 to win the 400m Hurdles

Earning four championship medals was Thomas Ten Eyck, Jr. of Golden.  Ten Eyck, 76, won the men's 75-79 Weight Throw (50-6), finished second in the Shot Put (35-1¼) and Hammer Throw (120-11) and was third in the Discus Throw (90-6).

Making three trips to the awards podium was Phil Cannon (Centennial State TC) of Aurora.  Cannon, 56, was second in the triple jump (36-0¾) and earned bronze medals in the 100m Hurdles (16.93) and Long Jump (17-4).

Double medalist were Sandra Halvatzis (W40-44 200m and 400m), Korey Hardiway (W35-39 100m and 200m), James McCrimmon (M60-64 300m hurdles and javelin throw), Carol Wilkinson (W70-74 10,000m race walk and 5000m race walk), and Christina Yarmul (W45-49 100m and 200m).
