Martino sets new masters record in Ohio

On Sunday (26-Sept) in Xenia, Ohio, Marianne Martino (High Altitude Racewalk Team), broke the existing masters 70-74 10,000m race walk American record*.

Competing in the USATF Ohio Association Championships Martino, 71, of Littleton stopped the clock at 1:05:37 to break the existing record by 2 minutes and 2 seconds set in 2006 by Bev McCall.

Earlier in the year Martino won two USATF titles (5,000m and 10 km) at the USATF Masters Outdoor Championship in Ames, Iowa and the 3000m regional title at the USATF Mid-America Championships in Fort Collins.

She is scheduled to next compete at the Huntsman World Senior Games next month in Utah.

*Martino's record is pending until ratified by USATF.

Going to Ohio for the 10,000m track race was a sudden decision after the Outdoor National Masters meet in Ames.

After entering a new age group last year and no place to compete, I simply couldn’t pass up this opportunity, even though I prefer road racing. Guess you could call it chomping at the bit! I had been training all along and felt that I had a good shot at an American Record. It all came together nicely and I could not be happier. The Ohio Association is known for good meets and this was no exception. My thanks to everyone at USATF Ohio!
