Sayre Lowers His Own American 25 km Record in Michigan

Last year, Golden's Roger Sayre established a new M65 25 km American record running 1:40:41 at the Amway River Bank Run in Grand Rapids, Michigan. On Saturday (11 May) he returned to Grand Rapids seeking to lower that record. Running in near-perfect conditions he was successful as he took 51 seconds off the record; running 1:39:50.

In 2023, Sayre was named the 2023 USATF Colorado Athlete of the Year (Masters LDR) and won the year-long USATF Masters National Grand Prix in the men's 65-69 division.

IN THEIR WORDS - ROGER SAYRE

Lining up I did not know what to expect because I pulled my hamstring a few weeks before the race and had to take a week off from training. However, in spite of a steady headwind over the first 8 miles the weather last Saturday was better than last year; it was 10 or 12 degrees cooler than in 2023. So I just locked into a steady pace, trying to run 20-flat or better for each 5 km segment, and it worked out. I enjoyed traveling to Grand Rapids to run this iconic race, which for decades has been a stop on the USATF road racing circuit.

Sayre's record is pending ratification by USATF.
