DeGrado and Boulder Road Runners M70+ win national titles in Sacramento

On Sunday (3-APRIL) 12 athletes and three (3) teams from Colorado competed in the USATF Masters 10 Mile Championships in Sacramento, Calf. The championship, hosted by the SACTOWN Run, was the fifth race in the 2022 USATF National Masters Grand Prix.

Tim DeGrado of Arvada and the Boulder Road Runners M70+ team ran to national titles against the top runners in the country.

DeGrado, 62, averaged under 6 minutes per mile as he crossed the line in 59:47 to win the men's 60-64 division.  His time scored 91.70% on the age-grading tables which was the fourth best score of the 120 men that competed. Scores of 90% and over are considered world class performances.   DeGrado's Boulder Road Runners teammates Adam Feerst, 62, of Denver and Jeffery Barros, 64, of Thornton finished fourth and 11th, respectively, in the 60-64 division.  Feerst ran 1:03:55 while Barros stopped the clock at 1:12:15.  As a team they finished second with a cumulative team time of 3:15:56.  Also earning a trip to the awards podium was the Athletics Boulder squad (Jay Littlepage, Rick Bruess, Martin Lascelles) as they finished third with a team time of 3:29:21.  The team winner was the SRA Elite team from California with a cumulative team time of 3:02:37.  Paul Hughes, 64, of Pagosa Springs, a citizen of Great Britain, ran 1:03:00 as a guest competitor.  His performance scored 88.72% on the age-grading tables; the second best on the day for the Colorado members.

The Boulder Road Runners 70+ team won the national title.  They were led by Doug Bell, 71 of Greeley and Mike Wien, 70, of Boulder.  Bell finished fifth in the 70-74 division with Wien one place back in sixth.  Bell's time was 1:14:45 with Wien 1:23 back in 1:16:08.  The third scorer on the team was Gary Ostwald, 76, of Denver.  Ostwald ran 1:19:50 to finish second in the 75-79 division.  The team's cumulative team time was 3:50:42; over seven minutes better than runner-up Tamalpa Runners of California.
