USOC SafeSport Training Program
The United States Olympic Committee has directed all of their National Governing Bodies, including USA Track & Field, to implement the SafeSport training program throughout their organization.  This training program is available free online and can be taken at your convenience.
SafeSport seeks to create a healthy, supportive environment for all our athletes compete and train.  Through education, resources, and training, we help members of the sport community recognize, reduce, and respond to misconduct in sport.
All USATF National Staff, Board Members, Youth Committee members, registered agents, coaches on the Coaches Registry, youth club coaches, and youth club administrators are required to complete the USOC SafeSport course; and all certified officials are expected to also complete the course.
The SafeSport online training module covers fourteen lesson areas that include, but are not limited to, sexual, physical and emotional misconduct; local and overnight travel; bullying and harassment. The training videos in total are approximately 90 minutes long and include four quizzes and a final exam.

Background Checks
One way to ensure our sport remains a fun and safe environment for everyone is to perform criminal background screening on coaches and volunteers who have direct contact with youth athletes.  USA Track & Field has implemented just such a program.   For details, go to the USATF Criminal Background Check Program pages.

Junior Olympics
The USATF Junior Olympic program is the most visible youth athlete developmental program in the world.  Nearly 70,000 youth athletes compete each year in the Junior Olympic Track & Field and Cross Country programs.

Through preliminary, Association, and Regional meets, athletes have the opportunity to advance to the National Championships in track & field and cross country.  USATF members can enter the Junior Olympics either as part of a USATF club or as "unattached."

Qualifying from Regional Championships to the National Championships - in Track & Field  the top five individuals and five relay teams advance to the National meet.  The top two individuals combined events and any others who meet a performance standard at the Regional Championship also advance.  The performance standard for all events is the average of the 8th place in the last three National Junior Olympic Championships.  The host Association qualifies a like number.
