IN THEIR WORDS

Brian Whitfield
This was my third time racing the MTM so coming in I thought I knew what the course would throw at me but, every year Im reminded how hard this course is. My training leading up to the race was not ideal but I am happy with a personal best on this course. With that being said I will always be striving for more and I'm sure I will be back. Since I am so young I feel like focusing on progression rather than results is crucial, it can be so easy to start comparing yourself to the greats of this sport and I find it important to remember that they all started somewhere.

I've learned everything I know about trail running from my coach Josh Eberly and training partner of more than three years Jesherun Small. I'm so grateful and proud for the community we are building over at Western Colorado University. The team is always learning more about the sport and working towards expanding the trail running world to more 18-25 year old runners. I'm in charge of recruiting for the Mountain Sports Trail Team and recently we had a lot of interest from high school runners at the Colorado state cross country meet, I hope good results from Western Mountain Sports athletes at big events like this race can help expand our program.

Tara Richardson
This is my second year running the USATF Marathon Trail championships at the Moab Trail Marathon.  I have been recovery from a plantar fascia tear so I only had a solid 4 weeks of training leading into the race. I think this is one of the most technical and physically demanding trail marathons so it was kind of the ultimate test for my foot. I was very happy to come away with third place and besides not being at my greatest fitness level my body and foot held up well!

The Moab Trail Marathon is a fantastic championship course. You get everything thrown at you from sand, big climbs, technical descents, ropes and ladders! It is a real test of your fitness and trail running abilities. If anyone is up for a challenging course where there is never a dull moment I highly recommend this race! It was so much fun to race again and great to see the number of young athletes doing so well from my alma mater Western State. I'm looking forward to a great 2020 season of trail racing!
